About the Old Apothecary House

Front of the house

The Old Apothecary House was built in the middle of the 19th century, although there is evidence of a dwelling on the site long before then, and occupies a prominent place in the main square of St. Georges de Reintembault. It overlooks the site of the weekly street market that is held every Thursday morning.
The oval shaped breakfast room, situated at the ground floor front of the house, was once the apothecary’s shop. It was still in use for this purpose as late as the middle of the last century and retains the slightly dated and somewhat worn charm and atmosphere of that ancien pharmacie .

However beyond this ancient frontage lies a spacious, elegant and very French Town House with high ceilings and large windows. The curved wooden staircase to the first floor is original, as is the wooden flooring in each of the bedrooms, and both play a large part in giving the house its unique character and sense of history.

The house has a quiet and tranquil atmosphere, as if time has been kind to it down the ages but not all its history has been peaceful. When the Germans came to St. Georges de Reintembault, as part of the army of occupation in 1940, the Old Apothecary House was used as a billet for German army officers. Some of the older members of our community can still remember those times.
Now however the house has been refurbished to 21 st century standards but while remaining a good example of a mid 19th century French provincial town house.
