The Area
Some interesting places to visit during your stay
Whether you are stopping en route to another destination or discovering the area for a few days, this part of France has a lot to offer.
Mont St Michel
This enchanting Abbey and medieval town built on a rock and separated from the mainland by a tidal causeway is probably best seen in Spring and Autumn as it has become, after the Eiffel Tower, the second most visited tourist attraction in France and as a consequence is always very busy in Summer. From the top of the Abbey the views across the bay are spectacular.
St James
Close by is the town of St James which has a small weekly market on a Monday. There is a statue of William the Conqueror in the Car Park and the American Cemetary which contains the graves of those Americans who were killed in Brittany during the Normandy campaign in 1944, is situated just outside the town on the road to St Georges de Reintembault.
Fougeres

Boasts a wide array of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars as well as some wonderful architecture.
It has the best restored medieval chateau in France and the oldest Belfry in Brittany,
and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the Jardins Publique.
St. Malo
Less than an hours drive is the famous medieval, walled town of St. Malo. Over-looking a large harbour and a beautiful long beach, it has a wide selection of shops, museums, stalls and restaurants. On the out-skirts of the town there is a spectacular aquarium.
Foret de Fougeres
Within 10 minutes drive of St. Georges de Reintembault is the ideal place to enjoy yourself whether your taste is to walk, cycle or ride. The Forest is criss crossed with footpaths and cycle paths that you can explore to your hearts content while there are few more splendid spots for a family picnic on a summers day. In the heart of the forest the Chenedet Recreation Centre offers hiking and horse riding expeditions and a lake with a beach where you can swim or bathe.
Local Markets

Still the centre of French social life, the weekly open air market, selling everything from garlic to clogs, is alive and well in Brittany and Normandy. On most mornings you will find a busy market in one of the towns and villages within easy striking distance of St. Georges.
Among the best are:
- St. Hilaire du Harcouet Wednesday
- Villedieu – les - Poeles - Tuesday
- Ducey - Tuesday (all year) & Sunday (July & August)
- Pontorson - Wednesday
- Avranches - Saturday
- Fougeres - Saturday
- Rennes - Saturday
- Vitre – Saturday
How about exploring the local countryside on a bike? If the idea appeals to you, then book your accommodation with the Old Apothecary House and your bicycles (and cycling itinery if you want one) from Brittany Borders Bicycling who offer bike hire in the area.
